It is with great sadness that the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in Australia advises the Duke of Ed community of the passing of the Honourable Gary Nairn AO, the immediate past Australian Chairman. Our thoughts and prayers are with Gary’s wife Rose and their families.
Gary was appointed Chairman of the National Board in 2018 and during the ensuing six years as its leader, every endeavour was keenly focussed on ensuring as many young Australians as possible would have access to the Duke of Ed. Gary relentlessly pursued Governments, sponsors, friends and acquaintances to raise funds so that any young Australian, regardless of circumstance, could access the Duke of Ed Framework. Gary and Rose have been generous donors and Duke of Ed Ambassadors supporting our extensive disadvantaged youth funding.
He was dogged in his determination to modernise the Duke of Ed Framework so that it could become increasingly accessible to young Australians. Gary led the Duke of Ed through a period of unrivalled growth. He also led it through the unprecedented challenges brought about by the COVID pandemic. That the Duke of Ed emerged from this period stronger and more accessible is testament to Gary’s leadership.
In 2023, His Royal Highness, The Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh KG, KT, GCVO acknowledged the awarding of the Gold Distinguished Service Medal to Gary, the most prestigious recognition of eminent service to the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in Australia.
We will share many memories of Gary over the days ahead, but none more true than that he was a wonderful citizen of our nation who gave so freely and willingly to enhance it.
