#Giving Tuesday

November 30, 2015

Giving Tuesday 3Black Friday Cyber Monday now Giving Tuesday – its all very confusing!

Black Friday is used by retailers to kick start the Christmas shopping season and often has sales to get the season going. Cyber Monday is another ploy by retailers to get you to shop online again to generate Christmas sales.

The good news is #Giving Tuesday isn’t all about asking you to open you wallets but to open your heart and soul and celebrate and give back to charities and not for profits that help so many Australians and people around the world.

#GivingTuesday inspires people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they celebrate and help create a better world.

Here at the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award- Australia we are not only celebrating the fact that we have over 35,000 Australian youth that volunteer and give back to their communities every year as a part of their Service component BUT we are also celebrating the 80,000+ volunteers and supporters who support the Award each year and help make it all possible.

A core component of the Duke of Ed Award is to “Challenge yourself to be a responsible, caring member of the community.” So Duke of Ed Participants give back to the community through the service section of the Award, whether it is surf lifesaving, environmental conservation, animal welfare, emergency services, teaching, or youth services.

However, the Award would not be possible without the support of Award Leader, Assessors, Supervisors, volunteers, parents/guardians, and Award Sponsors. The Award is supported by over 80,000 volunteers in Australia every year. Our volunteers and supporters play a significant role in the growth of our young Participants, while developing their personal teamwork and communication skills.

We would like to acknowledge and thank all our volunteers, who provide countless hours of support every year to our organisation and Participants. We are thrilled and fortunate to have such dedicated volunteers in our Duke of Ed family!

How you can get involved!

Now in its fourth year, the founders of #GivingTuesday harnessed the power of social media, bringing the idea to the forefront. Social media and the generosity of people around the world encourages the donation of time, resources and talents to address issues and work towards achieving greater good. So if you’re not already doing it now is the time to give back to your community, whether it’s volunteering your time or services to your local sporting team, charity, local business, or someone who has given to you.
