Entering our ‘Next Level’ Era

May 29, 2025

Approaching 70 Years of Empowering Young Australians

For almost 70 years, The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (Duke of Ed) has provided a Framework for enriching school curriculum with experiential learning.

As we approach the 70th anniversary in 2026, Australia is taking bold steps to ensure that more young people, from all backgrounds, can access, engage with and benefit from this globally recognised non-formal education Framework.

With over 8 million people having used the Duke of Ed worldwide since 1956, it has proven to be much more than just a badge to earn — it’s a proven framework for growing capability, wellbeing and opportunity through experiential learning, developing the skills, behaviours and attitudes to succeed in life and work. And in the face of a changing world, it’s evolving again.

What's New: Major Changes Rolling Out Nationally

To mark this milestone, the Duke of Ed Australia is undergoing its most significant set of upgrades in decades, taking the Duke of Ed to the “next level” with improvements shaped by feedback from educators, employers, young people, parents/guardians, and supporters across the country.

Here’s what’s changing…

  • No more ‘major section’- enabling 3-month completions (previously 6-month).
  • Only one Adventurous Journey (i.e. team challenge) required instead of 2
  • Greater incorporation of urban-based journeys; expanding beyond ‘bushwalks’.
  • Maximum Adventurous Journey group size increasing from 7 to 10.
